Moving home can be an exciting and positive experience, moving closer to family or friends, moving to a bigger and better home or moving to be closer to a particular school. Moving from one side of Swindon to another would be much easier than moving further away. Moving can be a difficult and stressful time, even when the move is welcome. This article aims to help you prepare the kids for moving house.
What can you do to help children feel happier about moving house?
Stay positive: Talk to them about it and say lots of positive things about what it will be like in the new home / area. Discuss the great new opportunities to design and decorate their new bedroom, what new local places and clubs they will be able to go to, etc. Talk about it calmly and say what you are looking forward too and how it will be positive for you (and the family too). Young children especially are most effected by the parents responses and reactions, so if it is a happy time for you, it is more likely to be a happy time for them.
Discuss worries: If they have lots of worries, talk them through, write them down and try to write a positive, next to each worry. For example, I will miss my friends – but I will be able to meet up and have sleepovers, I can contact them on some cool technology – FaceTime etc and there will be new friends to meet.
Plan the Date Carefully: End of a school year or between primary and secondary is always better than in the middle of a year. Think about it’s impact on birthdays or other special events.
Special Things : Pack some essentials / special things in a bag that can be found quickly and easily – special teddy, photos, colouring activity, etc.
Give them some control: Let them start to plan their new bedroom. Where their furniture will go, how their things will be organised – what colours theme they will choose. Older children may like to be given a small budget to buy some new accessories – cushions, rugs, lamp etc. Let them have some input in to the styling of other rooms too.
Child care: Consider whether your child will be better to spend the day elsewhere on moving day. If they are too young to help, will they feel like they are getting in the way or being left out whilst everyone else goes about moving things? If a relative can manage them and help them to do simple jobs, think what would be suitable. Unpack and prepare the childs room first so they can start to settle and feel they have a place to hang out.
